Framed Size: Height 39 cm x Width 46 cm x Depth 7.5 cm.
Image Size: Height 19 cm x Width 26 cm.
Condition: The overall condition of this painting is good. The canvas has been relined and there is some craquelure to the paint surface, but the paint is stable with no losses. The frame appears to be original and is in good condition with no loss to the moulding.
Provenance: Dutch auction label verso, Kunstveilingen (Art Auctions) Freda. Van Braam Dated Jul 1 1946 No.5111.

About: Jacob Hendricus Maris (Dutch 1837-1899) was a painter who belonged to what has come to be known as the Hague School of Painters. Maris was considered to be the most important and influential Dutch landscape painter of the last quarter of the nineteenth century. His first teacher was the artist J.A.B. Stroebel who taught him the art of painting from 1849 to 1852.

Famously known for his series of portraits of the Royal House of Orange, he is also known for his atmospheric landscapes like “Schip on the Scheveningen beach”. This painting is signed 'J Maris' and dated 1878.
